![]() The combat is definitely fun and has added depth stemming from the dodging, blocking and counter attacking mechanics. ![]() Mastering the advanced mechanics of Jump Force is difficult, but rewarding. Each character also comes with four unique abilities that can be utilized repeatedly during the fight. All the familiar mechanics are here in a newbie-friendly format like basic attacks, heavy attacks, throws, dodging, chasing, etc. Jump Force consists of 3 on 3 team battles in an arena, where all three characters on a team share the same health and special gauges. Now, let’s get to the real meat of a fighting game - the gameplay mechanics. While they do look great during combat, the characters definitely have some issues in cutscenes. This makes them look better and helps them blend into the Jump Force world which takes place in the real world for the most part, aside from some famous anime locations. The characters maintain their original design but are also adapted to 3D models in order to look realistic. The game’s visuals are a departure from traditional anime fighters that tend to borrow directly from the manga/anime art style that the game is based on. These characters can also be used in ranked and unranked online matches as well as offline local matches. You can complete missions to earn currency and get cosmetic accessories and fighting abilities for your character. It’s not like I really expected writing on par with Eiichiro Oda or Akira Toriyama, but at least some better interactions between characters? You have such an interesting cast to make use of and it just falls flat of interesting.Īside from story, the game has a decent customization system for players creating their own character, which is required to play the game. What seem like hastily put together cutscenes and minimal dialogue between the playable characters further push away from what these character would have excelled at. Jump Force seemed like a promising and fulfilling experience, but the story mode falls far short of expectations. But it just seems like an awful waste of potential to develop more character-centric storylines in the game. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that. However, for those not steeped in knowhow relating to the anthology of Weekly Shonen Jump, a lot of these characters will just seem like random arcade fighters. ![]() I was delighted to see inclusions from some classic manga titles as well as more recent ones like My Hero Academia. There are no introductions to the characters, making the game undoubtedly targeted towards hardcore manga and anime fans. Using something called an Umbras Cube, the player is given anime-like super powers and fighting abilities to help them combat evil. Freiza arrives in New York to wreak havoc, forcing Goku, Luffy and Naruto to chase him away. Jump Force is all about the collision of worlds as various protagonists and antagonists from shonen manga come together in our universe. You would expect a game like this to have a story that at least brings these characters to life in a way that is at least moderately interesting. Featuring 42 iconic characters from popular mangas like Bleach, HunterXHunter, My Hero Academia and even Yu-Gi-Oh!, Jump Force is undoubtedly the most ambitious crossover in recent history for an anime/manga video game. While the fighting mechanics seem aptly handled for a game with these many unique abilities and styles, the story does not do justice to the huge playable shonen manga roster. With this in mind, it was no surprise that the big 3 manga that were featured on the cover were Goku from Dragon Ball, Luffy from One Piece and Naruto from that one story about Boruto’s dad.ĭeveloped by Spike Chunsoft and published by Bandai Namco, Jump Force is a spiritual successor to J-Stars Victory VS. Celebrating the Japanese weekly manga anthology, Shonen Jump magazine’s 50th anniversary, the game was meant to feature some of the faces that had made the publication a success throughout the years. Since its grand reception at E3, Jump Force had been one of the most anticipated anime fighter games.
